French Revolution on Film: Danton & La Nuit de Varennes

Two excellent films set during the French Revolution are DANTON (1983) and LA NUIT DE VARENNES (1982). Danton is available on DVD through Netflix etc. La Nuit is very difficult to come by. The VHS is a collector's item and although French TV often shows it, America TV rarely does. There are a few clips on Youtube. The famed memoirist and rake Casanova (played by Marcello Mastroianni) is a key figure in the narrative. Both films are excellent presentations of Ancien Regime and Revolutionary cultural experiences. Danton focuses on the tumultuous relationship between the title figure and Robespierre, while La Nuit shows the danger and despair faced by the aristocracy as King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are taken captive in their attempted flight from France.
